Many of fail to recognize weak leadership in our organization because we are so close to the situation it is hard to see it fully. It is imperative that you ask yourself the question, “Might the leadership in my organization be failing?” Take this simple test to determine the answer. There is nothing to write or score, just keep a mental tab of the “yes” or “no” answers. You are encouraged to hae your leadership take the test as well.
Our organization reflects:
- Excessive meetings
- A preponderance of consensus-driven decision making (Cover Your Behind mentality)
- Lack of personal accounrability
- Time consuming or meaningless performance appraisals
- Communication challenges
- Difficulty terminating poor performers
- Misalignment/lack of coordinated effort
- Difficulty keeping employees motivated
- Unacceptable results
- Time management problems
- Reactive rather than proactive strategies
- Micromanagement
- Can’t do it attitude
- Chronically sagging numbers (revenue, membership, etc.)
- Unproductive teams and/or ineffective teamwork
- Duplication of effort
- High staff turnover
- Failure to achieve quality standards (or complete lack of standards)
- Fear of making decisions
If you responded yes to one or more of these conditions your organization has a leadership challenge. However, this does not necessarily mean that you, the reader, are an ineffective leader. It is a warning sign that if left unattended, will result in challenges in the future. How long do you dare wait?
